Last month we had our 1st Poetry Embroidery Circle!
In the style of Twitter, poets were invited to read their 140 or fewer character poems, as well as other pieces of their choice, while audience members attempted to stitch what they heard. Although fingers weren’t as quick and nimble as hoped, a huge turn out sat listening and amused, gaining a new appreciation forthe delicate craft.
Another fun and social gathering is headed our way!
The clock strikes the greenest of hours Wednesday, July 17th at 7pm as BKLYN Green Drinks returns to 61 Local. Brought to this borough by the international concept of Green Drinks, BGD is a free monthly, informal, and sustainably minded social networking event. Join other environmentalists, NGOs, students, government folk, and green thumbs from Brooklyn and beyond as we wind down, wind up, meet, greet, network, and start things!
As June 21st marks the first day of the season, Summer has officially arrived. And what better way celebrate the season than by enjoying some Phin & Phebes Ice Cream ice cream! We are so thankful for everyone who came out, and all the amazing vendor and regulars who have supported us over the past couple of years. Cheers to another great year ahead!
It has been two years since we threw open our doors so that friends and neighbors in the community could gather at our long tables to throw back some brew and swap ideas and resources. Get over here for special soda shandies and a knife raffle (that’s right!) where all proceeds will benefit another bountiful farming season at BK Farmyards. We love all the super fun events we get to have here at 61 Local, like the recent visit from local cook Cathy Erway
. Cathy brought her eating-in expertise to teach a class on how to make dumplings. She taught a group of folks how to make this treat in the comfort of their own kitchen. There were traditional, vegetarian, and even a cheese burger dumpling for people to try!
We’ve got some pretty sweet events going on this week, too. Swing by Tuesday night at 7pm for another amazing installment of The Folding Chair Reading Series
. Can’t get enough of some local lit? Then be here on Wednesday night for the next installment of The Atlas Review

Lately we’ve been having a rip roaring time here at 61 Local, and its largely due to one of our newest events: BackFat. The local variety show, put together by comedians Janet and Emily, brought together some of Brooklyn’s awesome talent for a side splitting nights full of slapstick, hilarious jokes, and even a puppet show! Be on the look out for their next show in January.
We’ve got even more local folks taking the stage on Tuesday! Join us as Lit Wrap
hosts a reading dedicated to winter! Be sure to grab a brew from the bar before you cozy up to some good lit! Reading starts at 7p.
It was an awesome night of sugary treats when our friends Liz and Jen from Liddabit Sweets
dropped by not too long ago. They hung out here at 61 Local to release their latest tasty delight: The Liddabit Sweets Candy Cookbook
. There were lots of cookies, chocolate ice cream cones, and celebratory brews to round out the night!
Come get involved with another confection here at 61 Local! Renee from Kitchen Table Scraps will be setting up shop here for her Gingerbread Block Project. From Nov. 28 - Dec. 9 she’ll be constructing gingerbread brownstones and other New York inspired buildings. You can even volunteer and get your hands into the gingerbread fun! At the end of the month, the finished product will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to benefit City Harvest.
Red Hook is a place that holds not only some of our favorite people, but also some of the amazing food folks that we get to work with every week here at 61 Local. So, it seemed fitting that the Sunday after Sandy hit we all rallied together to give back to the neighborhood. The South Brooklyn Running Club
was quick on their feet and organized an awesome local fundraiser run with the help of 61 Local. The response was inspiring! Hundreds of people from all over the borough made their way to 61 to help raise money for the Red Hook Initiative
, an integral organization committed to rebuilding one of our favorite neighborhoods. We were honored to be asked to host the start and finish of the race. We served up some pre and post race brew to the many thirsty runners.
Come help us continue to support Red Hook and our local community! Join us this Thursday when Manufacture New York
holds their benefit for Red Hook recovery. There will be a silent auction full of one-of-a-kind, NYC made designs. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Red Hook Initiative. Be sure to swing by, and help us celebrate the resilience of Red Hook!
