Red Hook is a place that holds not only some of our favorite people, but also some of the amazing food folks that we get to work with every week here at 61 Local. So, it seemed fitting that the Sunday after Sandy hit we all rallied together to give back to the neighborhood. The South Brooklyn Running Club was quick on their feet and organized an awesome local fundraiser run with the help of 61 Local. The response was inspiring! Hundreds of people from all over the borough made their way to 61 to help raise money for the Red Hook Initiative, an integral organization committed to rebuilding one of our favorite neighborhoods. We were honored to be asked to host the start and finish of the race. We served up some pre and post race brew to the many thirsty runners.
Come help us continue to support Red Hook and our local community! Join us this Thursday when Manufacture New York holds their benefit for Red Hook recovery. There will be a silent auction full of one-of-a-kind, NYC made designs. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Red Hook Initiative. Be sure to swing by, and help us celebrate the resilience of Red Hook! -
Red Hook Ride with 61 Local

Riding down Columbia St. on our way to Red Hook!
You may not be able to get to Red Hook by train, but you sure can visit this waterfront neighborhood by bike. And that’s just what a whole group of folks did earlier this month. The once forgotten part of Brooklyn is now a hub for artists and artisans alike. We led a parade of bicycles through the quaint cobblestone streets to spend time with some of our favorite Red Hook producers. At Cacao Prieto we got the full story about where their ingredients come from as we nibbled on their velvety dark chocolate. Then at Red Hook Winery we sipped on our samples while we marveled at their brand new winery, barrel room, and tasting room right on the waterfront! Complete with a beautiful view of Lady Liberty.
Come join us for the Red Hook Ride this whole summer, the first Saturday of every month. The next ride is August 4. Tickets are $15 and get you in on an extra special tour and tasting of both Cacao Prieto and Red Hook Winery. Expect good people, bursts of local pride, and the cool breeze in your hair. Spots are limited so sign up to save your place!
Caroline of Cacao Prieto tells the group about how the cacao beans are prepared to make their chocolate. All the beans come from one family farm in the Dominican Republic.
And this is where they make their rum!
The bicycle bunch gathers around to sample dark chocolate and rum, and see all the goodies Cacao Prieto makes with such loving care.
On to Red Hook Winery! Daren provides some social lubrication with a bottle of Riesling in their beautiful new tasting room right on the waterfront!
Into the barrel room we go. This is where many of Red Hook Winery’s wines are aged before they make their way to the bottle and then into your glass.
Kris and Cristina, the leaders of the bike tour pack, enjoy some refreshing wine samples.
Hanging out in the back of Red Hook Winery, enjoying the fresh air and a special view of the bay.
And there she is, the Lady Liberty. What a great way to end a winery tour!
